Beware the Mountain of Should

The Mountain of Should

The word “should” is one that sparks a reaction. The dictionary will tell you it’s a word that signals a duty or obligation. I previously wrote about “you should” and received reactions from all over the world.

Don’t you just love it when someone tells you that “you should” do something?

How much of our life is due to a “should”?

An obligation that someone else decides that they want to put onto us.

“Should is a futile word. It’s about what didn’t happen. It belongs in a parallel universe.” -Margaret Atwood

If you’ve read my book, The Book of Mistakes: 9 Secrets to Creating a Successful Future, you know that mistake number one is often the result of listening to the “you should” voices in your life.

(If you haven’t read my book, you should! Sorry, I just had to say that.)

Your Future Is Up to You

Life is not meant to be a burden of “shoulds” imposed by others.

Your future should be a product of your own decisions and dreams.

Brady Gill produced this little short video on “the mountain of should” that illustrates the point beautifully. Click below and watch his message.

And then, when someone tells you that “you should” do something, you can respond with perspective and positivity.

“Strike the word should from your vocabulary.” -Scott Mautz

Here’s to your future, free of the mountain of should.
